Beaux Freres Ribbon Ridge "Sequitur Vineyard" Pinot Noir

Sequitur (Latin, meaning “followed by”) is a vineyard privately owned by Michael G. Etzel and Carey Critchlow; a 12-acre site directly adjacent to Beaux Frères’ Upper Terrace vineyard. Sequitur is unique in its diverse collection of 17 distinct Pinot Noir clones, and is farmed following many biodynamic principles, allowing native ground cover to flourish. The vines also grow happily alongside Carey’s bee hives – colonies nourished by edge rows of flowering herbs, namesakes of the Lavender Block (planted in 2012) and Rosemary Block (planted in 2013).

This is lifted, a model of purity with crisp wild berries and sweet herbal tones lifted by zesty acidity. The 2021 leaves a crunchy sensation on the palate, finishing with a tart raspberry resonance and grippy tannins. This is built for the cellar. This wine shows a flashy core of dark fruits on the aromatic profile with an underlying note of mint. Done in concrete casks, you see lithe berries across the palate, earth, cherries and dusty gravel. Winemaker Mikey Etzel says, ‘This site shows young vines and some of their unresolved tannin issues.’ 93 Wine Spectator Richly structured and full-bodied, with compelling raspberry and guava flavors accented by forest floor and cardamom notes, plus other dusky spices, which build tension toward medium-grained tannins. The light-bodied palate is silky and seamless with concentrated fruit and a perfumed finish. It’s youthfully coiled at this stage and deserves 3-5 years in the cellar.
