A smaller production compared to the Caparsino, with just 6,700 bottles made, the organic Caparsa 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Doccio a Matteo is 98% Sangiovese with a 2% splash of Colorino. The wine is fermented with spontaneous yeasts and aged in smaller oak cask for the most part with a little percentage of the wine finishing in cement. It shows a dark garnet color with aromas of spicy fruit, plum, blackberry and cherry liqueur. It closes with sweet tannins and medium-rich concentration.
The 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Doccio a Matteo is stellar. Dark, ample and layered, the 2019 possesses remarkable depth and nuance right out of the gate. Black cherry, lavender, licorice, coffee and new leather all flesh out in this deceptively mid-weight Riserva. Impressive. Proprietor Paolo Cianferoni makes some of the most compelling wines in all of Chianti Classico from his small hillside vineyard in Radda. The cramped cellar really belongs to a previous era, a time when the emphasis was on wine rather than appearances. Speaking of the wines, the 2019s capture all the best this tricky vintage ha to offer. I was blown away. Readers who appreciate old-school Chianti Classicos will want to check out Caparsa.
