Pauillac de Chateau Latour 2017

The 2017 Pauillac is a gorgeous wine. Unlike most of the Latour releases of these last few years, it needs more time in bottle! There is plenty of textural depth, but the acids are high and the tannins are a bit larger in size than is typical for the Pauillac. I very much like the wine’s exuberance and power. The 2017 is still very vibrant. It just needs time to develop more aromatic nuance.

Concentrated black cherries on the nose, pinkish purple in the rim. Dark nose, full of blackcurrant and touches of liquorice. Smooth texture, so juicy and mouthwateringly fresh – the flavours really hit straight away – bright cherries and strawberries, hints of liquorice, mint leaf and clove giving a lovely subtle edge of spice. Feels concentrated and dense but with a really lovely succulent lift. Tannins are soft and fine grained, full of juice and life. This has impact and generosity on the palate filled with concentrated flavours and a long finish, such a lovely overall mouthfeel

Latour’s indecently good 2017 Le Pauillac de Château Latour bursts with fragrant aromas of creamy cassis, wild berries and plums. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and polished, it’s supple and succulent, with an enveloping core of fruit, lively acids and already melting tannins. This is already very approachable on release.

This has aromas of blackberries, porcini mushrooms, tobacco and charred bark. It’s medium-bodied with fine, supple tannins. Savory, with plenty of earth and mineral character. Fresh finish. Drink or hold.

Based on 52.9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39.9% Merlot, and 7.2% Petit Verdot, the 2017 Le Pauillac De Chateau Latour shows the classic style of the vintage, yet has rock-solid density and depth as well as some Latour class. Blackcurrants, cassis, smoked tobacco, new leather, and graphite all emerge from the glass, and it’s medium-bodied, textured, and elegant on the palate.

This has a lovely feel, with a mix of graphite and velvet textures carrying dark plum, warmed cassis and cherry reduction notes along. Flashes of alder, licorice and warm earth peek in throughout. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2032.

This is already very complex with tobacco, blackberries and hints of cedar. It’s medium-bodied with firm and layered tannins. Juicy and so delicious. It can age, too. Delightful now, but better after 2025.

Decanter
Ripe red cherries and plums with tobacco and spice notes – this smells hot and heady, forward and indulgent. Mouthwatering straight away – juicy with sucrosity hinting at the hot vintage. Slightly thick and plump in the mouth but tannins are also firmly textured giving bite and spiced wood elements on the tongue. The Cabernet stands out giving a medicinal herbal element and wide menthol finish that makes it feel cool and fresh, though clearly there is power there. Still quite young. I like the composition, the nuance of elements with power, structure and heft, but also the definition you get at the end reminding you it’s a serious wine. 76 IPT. 5.7% press wine. 21% production. Harvest 17 September to 11 October.

I’m always shocked at the quality of the base Pauillac from this château, but I guess at this point I shouldn’t be, given that it’s outstanding in just about every vintage. The 2018 Le Pauillac De Château Latour has a medium to full-bodied, ripe, rounded, even sexy style as well as sunny aromatics of red and black fruits, smoked tobacco, and lead pencil shavings. It’s balanced, concentrated, and incredibly satisfying.

This has chocolate, cedar and walnuts as well as some currant aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied with some lovely fruit and juiciness. 55.8% cabernet sauvignon, 38.8% merlot and 5.4% petit verdot. Attractive now but another year or two will make it even better.

The 2019 Pauillac is a serious wine. Dark cherry, plum, gravel, incense, licorice and pomegranate are all dialed up in this wonderfully deep, freshy Pauillac. Deep and resonant, with ne balance, the 2019 captures all the natural radiance of the year. This is really quite stellar and delicious. A recent bottle of the 2009 reminded me how pleasurable the Latour Pauillac can be.

The 2019 Le Pauillac de Château Latour is a strong effort, offering up inviting aromas of cassis and plums mingled with notions of cigar wrapper, vanilla pod and creamy oak. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with good concentration and powdery tannins, it will offer a broad drinking window.

Sweet scents on the nose, strawberry and red cherry with some dark chocolate. Supple and lively, smooth and sumptuous at first, then more straight and well defined with a mineral, salty and chalky texture on the palate that grips and coats the mouth. It’s very pleasant with high acidity and an enjoyable crushed stone juiciness adding to the clearly ripe fruit. It’s complex with bitter orange and dark chocolate alongside toasted herbal accents. It definitely has a serious edge to it and I would still decant if drinking soon but overall it’s very characterful and nicely structured.
