Alphonse Mellot, Sancerre BLANC, "La Demoiselle"

La Demoiselle, a cuvee from a deep flinty clay terroir on the peak of Sancerre, in the heart of the appellation. This 100% Sauvignon white wine, with its saline flavors on a background of pink grapefruit, is a combination of pleasurable contrasts. Its refreshing crystalline palate is set off by subtle oaky notes and has more than a hint of gunflint about it.

Accompanying hot oysters, blanched veal, sauteed turkey with sweet paprika or a lightly warmed tarte tatin, La Demoiselle will reveal its full depth and richness with the passage of time and be at its very best after several years laying down.

Alphonse Mellot, Sancerre BLANC, "La Demoiselle" 2021	92 Vinous La Demoisellle is part of the narrow slice of Sancerre vineyards that are planted on clay-flint. The vines tumble towards the Loire to the east of the village, separated from the rest of the appellation’s limestone-based vineyards to the west of the fault line that slices through the area. The 2021 is a crisp, pure style with the flint giving a sense of direction throughout while the mid palate is suffused with a fragrance akin to elderflower, pineapple and pear. Tangy and balanced, it is very attractive in youth for its primary aromas but can evolve. Tasted as a finished sample in tank. 96 Wine Review Online La Demoiselle translated from French is “young lady.” From the In Mellot family, we have a “feisty young lady” grown in clay-flint soil. It has a pale yellow color and forward, lemony, chalky aromas. The winegrower clearly knows how to extract excellent quality from the soils in the various sites where the vines are planted. This is round in the mouth with concentrated lemon-lime flavor and very crisp acidity. This is a wine that has elegance and a fine hand, but charming it isn’t—that’s Pinot Noir on int. It has a real identity, making it a wine lover’s wine.
