Weinbach MT0 Gewurztraminer/Pinot Gris Natural 2021	94 James Suckling “A wonderful nose of chamomile and lemon balm. Ripe and succulent, but so elegant and silky on the mid-palate, then the lively acidity of the vintage really lights up the long finish. So much freshness there, but the acidity is already beautifully integrated. A cuvee of 70% auxerrois and 30% pinot blanc. From biodynamically grown grapes. MV0 stands for Macération Vogelgarten Ø Intrant (meaning ‘zero inputs’). 70% Gewurztraminer and 30% Pinot Gris from parcels in the Vogelgarten vineyard, which they bought in 2019 and are converting to biodynamics. Old vines. Co picked and co-fermented. Spontaneous fermentation. Three weeks’ skin contact and then aged for 10 months in old foudres. No additions, no added sulphites. 100% natural malo. The colour of pale Fanta orange and texture that feels like licking terracotta tiles. Strikingly smoky– it reminded me of smoked ham! Musk melon fruit tinged with candied angelica and something rich, almost cheesy, like meltingly nutty washed-rind cheese. Rich and bold, but fresh and the finish shaped by an appetising bitterness.
