Weinbach Riesling Grand Cru Schlossberg Cuvee Ste. Catherine

Cuvee Ste. Catherine was created in 1984 before the accession of the grand cru system in Alsace. The was a challenging vintage with a cool, wet summer and the Riesling grapes were not ripe at all in September. Luckily, Alsace was blessed with a beautiful Indian summer and the last Rieslings from Schlossberg were picked on November 25th, Ste. Catherine’s Day.

This Riesling comes from the domaine’s oldest vines in the grand cru Schlossberg vineyard, situated mid-slope. It is the finest and richest of the domaine’s dry Rieslings. It is full and rich on the palate, well-structured and finely balanced; dry with a long, harmonious finish.

Weinbach Riesling Grand Cru Schlossberg Cuvee Ste. Catherine 2021	98 James Suckling A giant dry riesling that is so cool, focused and precise, it comes across as only mediumbodied in spite of the enormous concentration of citrus fruit, spice and wet stone minerality. Very pristine finish with a wonderful silkiness that doesn’t want to let you go. This took a whole year to ferment, and that clearly worked extremely well. From biodynamically grown grapes Demeter certification. Drink or hold. 95 Decanter White flowers and exotic fruit leap from the glass. Aromatic complexity includes blood orange, Key Lime pie, candied citrus, and marzipan, which suggest sweetness, but the palate is dry. The long finish is marked more by wet stone freshness.
