Nicolas Rossignol Volnay 1er Cru Santenots 16

An extremely ripe yet not premature nose of menthol, plus liqueur and cassis aromas lead to very rich, indeed even opulent medium-bodied flavors that exude an abundance of palate coating dry extract on the velvety, powerful and coffee-infused finish of dramatic persistence. This is not an especially elegant version of the appellation nor does it have the intense minerality of the best examples yet it is compelling in its own right.” -Allen Meadows from Burghound

N/Apts Vinous – Antonio Galloni– 2015 vintage

FOR THE 2015 VINTAGE
(13% natural alcohol; already racked into cuve): Very dark red with ruby tones. Liqueur-like black fruits on the nose, which shows a faintly tired quality. Then much fresher in the mouth but in a closed stage, conveying considerable power to the flavors of kirsch, blackberry and licorice. This rather massive Volnay, from deep, iron-rich soil, finishes with strong tannins and a faint animal quality. Rossignol works with two hectares, vinifying three different parcels and then assembling the wine. This wine is in an awkward phase now but I will give it the benefit of the doubt as it has not yet been sulfured. (91-93 POINTS)

N/Apts The Wine Advocate– 2016 vintage

FOR THE 2016 VINTAGE
The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Ronceret was 100% destemmed. Living up to its name there is plenty of blackberry and wild hedgerow on the nose although I would like to see more vigor develop by the time it is bottled. The palate is well balanced with chewy tannin, crisp acidity, quite muscular for a Volnay but there is fine precision on the lightly spiced finish. The length here is impressive, although I think Nicolas Rossignol made more complex and terroir-specific wines in this vintage.

N/Apts The Wine Advocate– 2017 vintage

FOR THE 2017 VINTAGE
The 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots is one of the richest, most powerful wines in the cellar this year, exhibiting aromas of smoked meats, plums, cassis and spices. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, dense and chewy, with an abundance of chalky structuring tannin and an expansive finish. 90-92+pts
